A Tesla test-drive vehicle crashed into a sign structure at the entrance of the IFC Mall in Seoul’s Yeouido district on August 18, injuring three people inside the car. Police said the vehicle was not operating in autonomous mode at the time. All three occupants, including the driver, were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, and authorities reported no life-threatening conditions.
The collision occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. near the mall’s entrance in Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo District, shortly after the car exited a parking area close to the Tesla Yeouido store. Investigators said the vehicle struck a signboard or stone marker at the building’s entryway. No additional injuries among pedestrians or bystanders had been confirmed as of the latest update.
Seoul police and fire officials responded to the scene and opened an inquiry into how the car moved from the parking exit toward the entrance structure. While early checks found no signs of alcohol or drug impairment by the driver, officers emphasized they are not treating the incident as a simple case of driver error without further verification. The investigation is examining the driver’s use of the accelerator and brake, along with other control inputs immediately before impact.
Authorities have not identified any mechanical defect with the vehicle and have not pointed to sudden unintended acceleration as a cause. Although such speculation can circulate online after high-profile crashes, officials have not attributed this incident to a vehicle malfunction. Police confirmed that driver-assistance features commonly associated with “autonomous driving” were not engaged; in Tesla vehicles, these systems require active driver supervision and can be switched off, as they were in this case.
The IFC Mall area is a dense commercial zone in central Yeouido, a major business and finance hub in Seoul that combines retail, office towers, and subway access. The crash took place during a weekday afternoon near a building entrance, but there were no confirmed injuries beyond the vehicle’s occupants.
Investigators plan to review nearby CCTV footage, analyze vehicle data, and interview the driver to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine the precise cause of the collision. Police said their findings will reflect a combination of physical evidence and witness accounts rather than assumptions about technology or operator error.
