Tesla Test Drive Vehicle Crashes into IFC Mall Sign in Yeouido, Three Hospitalized

A Tesla test-drive vehicle crashed into the entrance sign structure of IFC Mall in Seoul’s Yeouido district on the afternoon of August 18, sending all three occupants to a hospital with minor injuries. Police said the car was not operating in autonomous mode at the time and have opened an investigation into how the driver handled the vehicle in the moments before impact.

According to authorities, the collision occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. near the main approach to IFC Mall in Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo District, shortly after the vehicle exited a nearby parking facility by the Tesla Yeouido Store. The front of the car struck the mall’s entrance signage, a freestanding structure that marks the complex. No additional injuries among pedestrians or bystanders had been confirmed as of the latest update.

Emergency responders from Seoul’s fire and disaster services treated the three people who were inside the vehicle, including the driver, and transported them for evaluation. Officials indicated the injuries were not life-threatening.

With public interest often focused on whether advanced driver-assistance features play a role in crashes, police emphasized that the Tesla’s autonomous functions were not active. Investigators have conducted initial checks for alcohol or drug use and reported no indications of impairment. Even so, they are not treating the incident as a simple case of driver error without further review. The inquiry is examining the vehicle’s path out of the parking area, whether acceleration and braking were applied as intended, and other aspects of driver input.

Authorities said no mechanical defect has been identified at this stage. Investigators plan to analyze nearby closed-circuit television footage, vehicle data, and driver statements to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine a precise cause. Online speculation that often arises around sudden unintended acceleration in electric vehicles has not been substantiated by officials in this case.

The crash took place in one of Seoul’s busiest commercial zones. Yeouido, often described as the city’s financial hub, concentrates office towers, retail complexes such as IFC Mall, and key transit links. Despite the weekday timing and proximity to a building entrance, officials have not reported casualties beyond the occupants of the car.
